Team Hot Rumors
Astros The Houston Chronicle reported that despite the threat of a strike, Astros GM Gerry Hunsicker was working the phones in hopes of making a trade to strengthen his team for the pennant stretch. Hunsicker refused to say which players he was seeking, but the Astros likely were looking for a pitcher or infielder. "I'm still working on a few things," Hunsicker said. "I wouldn't rule out the possibility of making a trade or two."
Cubs The Sun-Times reported Bruce Kimm's future as manager remained uncertain. Shortly after the season is over, GM Jim Hendry will let Kimm know if he's going to interview outside candidates for the managing position or hire him back for at least two or three years. The newspaper said public consensus rated Kimm a long shot to retain this job.
Twins The Star-Tribune reported Twins GM Terry Ryan was scouring the waiver wire, not giving up hope that he could add a player before Saturday's deadline for players to be eligible for the postseason roster. "I look at the waiver wire just like any GM does," Ryan said. "Am I going to take on a guy with a huge salary? No." Ryan would not specify what area on the team he's trying to improve, but a veteran righty hitter could be on the list.
