Appleby picked up his first PGA Tour win at the 1997 Honda Classic with his late wife Renay in attendance. She died in 1998 in a tragic accident when struck by a car. Appleby is a native of Cohuna, Australia and was raised on a dairy farm where he would often practice. A noted long hitter, Appleby was a Nike Tour standout before arriving on the PGA Tour as well as a multiple winner both as a professional and an amateur in Australia.
