Fred Couples
Couples is the rare combination of creative genius and pure
ability. He can overpower a course with brute strength or finesse
it with a soft touch from the wedge or putter. He was twice named
Player of the Year in 1991 and '92, voted in by his peers. Couples was
the Vardon Trophy winner in 1991 and '92 and the Arnold Palmer
Award winner in '92. Dogged by a temperamental back in recent years, he has had to cut down on playing time as well as travel. Won his first event at the 1983 Kemper Open and his only major in 1992 at the
Masters. Teamed with Davis Love III, Couples won four consecutive
World Cup of Golf titles from 1992-95 as well as Skins Games in 1995
and 1996.
