Behind the Numbers
By Jason Beck
Non-Rocky Mountain highThe Rockies haven't had much offense to boast away from Coors Field in their history, but they tied a National League record Wednesday by scoring in every inning of their 13-6 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Only six other teams have scored in every inning of a nine-inning NL game. The Cardinals last accomplished the feat on Sept. 13, 1964, also against the Cubs. The New York Giants are the only other team to do so in the 20th century, pulling it off June 1, 1923, against Philadelphia. Amazingly, no American League team has scored in each inning of a nine-inning game. Four AL home teams scored in the first eight innings, but didn't get the chance to bat in the ninth. The Cubs scored their runs over three innings, leaving the clubs two innings short of the 20th-century record of most innings scored in by both teams in a nine-inning game. Two NL teams have scored in 14 half-innings four different times. The Rockies enter Friday's game against Philadelphia with runs in 13 consecutive innings, one short of the NL record. Playing to GwynnTony Gwynn isn't just threatening to join history with his 3,000th hit later this month. He's racing it.
Wade Boggs stood at 2,943 hits through 2,370 games entering Wednesday. Cal Ripken stands at 2,883 hits after 2,712 games. Hitting for nothingWhile Giants infielder Jeff Kent hit for the cycle Monday at Pittsburgh, Jason Kendall also pounded out a five-hit game. The reason the Pirate catcher's effort went unnoticed is that it didn't mean anything. Kendall went 5-for-5 with neither a run scored nor a run batted in, a fantasy owner's bittersweet linescore. It's just the eighth time since 1970 a player went 5-for-5 without a run scored or driven in. The last player to accomplish the feat was Jeff Blauser on June 10, 1996. It also marked the first time in 30 years that two players on opposing teams had five-hit performances in the same National League nine-inning game. Cincinnati's Johnny Bench and Philadelphia's Deron Johnson went 5-for-6 in a 19-17 Reds win on Aug. 3, 1969. Even more stats0 -- Wins by the Texas Rangers when they score less than four runs in a game. 3 -- Number of times in the last 10 years that the Cubs had reached 13 wins before tallying 13 losses. In two of those seasons, the Cubs made the postseason (1989 and 1998). They also pulled the feat in 1995. They sat at 13-11 after Tuesday. 5 -- Games this year in which Marlins first baseman Derrek Lee has not struck out. 9 -- Career leadoff homers for White Sox second baseman Ray Durham, breaking Tim Raines' team record. 11 -- Games in which the Marlins have scored one run or less. Also, the number of such games which they have lost. 25 -- Consecutive games in which Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has reached base. 38 -- Double plays the Royals have turned, leading the league. 498 -- Bases that Braves outfielder Otis Nixon has stolen since turning age 30.
