Travis Chapman then hit a grounder which was booted by second baseman Bolt, allowing Wiese to score and give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.

Nebraska promptly erased the Bulldog lead with a run of their own in the bottom of the first inning. Jamal Strong drew a walk from MSU starter Brian Compton to lead off the inning. After a flyout by Adam Shabala, Ken Harvey moved the runner to second with a groundout to the pitcher. Jeff Hedman then came through with a sharp single to right field, scoring Strong with the tying run.

The Bulldogs continued the seesaw ride in the second inning as Chris Curry took Wiles' second pitch of the inning and rifled it over the wall in left-center field for his seventh home run of the season, giving the 'Dogs a 2-1 advantage.

After Jon Knott struck out, Josh West lined a single to right field. Lotterhos then blooped a single to center, and Martin continued the hit parade with a three-run homer to right field, his fifth of the season, giving Mississippi State a 5-1 lead after an inning and a half.

Nebraska then made a pitching change, bringing in Jaron Bearinger to face Knott with the bases loaded. After Rock fouled out to the catcher and Curry grounded into a fielder's choice, Knott was hit by a pitch, moving Curry to second. West then drove Curry home with a solid single to center, bumping the MSU lead to eight, 16-8.

After going scoreless for three consecutive innings, the Cornhuskers dented the scoreboard in the eighth inning against Mississippi State's Matt Ginter. Cowan drew a walk to lead the inning off. After Bailey flied out to left field, Cole hit a single to right field. Ginter then fanned Vlieger, but followed it with a walk to Bolt.

Strong stepped up and hit a single off the top of Wren's outstretched glove at first base, scoring Cowan and Cole. Shabala then coaxed Ginter for another walk, bringing Harvey to the plate. The nation's leading hitter didn't disappoint, as he ripped the pitch off the wall in left field, clearing the bases and bringing Nebraska within three, 16-13.

MSU then pulled Ginter, bringing in Kevin Donovan. Pinch-hitter Erik Mumm greeted Donovan with a single to center field, scoring Harvey with the Huskers' sixth and final run of the inning. Nebraska sent 10 men to the plate in the big inning.
