June 4, 1999 Summer camps showcase blue-chippers
By Charlie McCarthy
Off-season camps that showcase next year's high school stars and top college recruits got into full swing on Memorial Day weekend. The two most noteworthy events were the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions in Chapel Hill, N.C., and the Hoop Festival in Lexington, Ky.
Andre Barrett, a 5-7 point guard from Rice HS in New York City, was the leading scorer at the Tournament of Champions. His top schools are Duke, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Syracuse, Clemson, Florida State, N.C. State and Villanova. At Lexington, Omar Cook, a point guard from Christ the King HS (Queens, N.Y.), indicated he might be committing to North Carolina during November's fall signing period. "I want to come somewhere where I play right away," Cook told the Lexington Herald-Leader. "I've got to play right away. I've got to have a lot of players around me." Tar Heels point guard Ed Cota will be a senior next season, and incoming freshman Jon Holmes was recruited to be a backup. At Kentucky, Saul Smith, son of Wildcats coach Tubby, will be a senior when Cook is a freshman. "That probably fades me away (from Kentucky)," Cook said. "It's really tough. I was told he would be the point guard next year. Then when I came, I'd have the chance to start. At North Carolina, I don't have to worry about (an incumbent) point guard."
Free throwsDarius Miles, a 6-8 forward from East St. Louis, reportedly is considering bolting to the NBA next year. His college choices include Duke, Kentucky, Illinois and Saint Louis. ... Taliek Brown, a 5-11 point guard from St. John's Prep in Queens, N.Y., is looking at St. John's, Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Syracuse, Texas and Arkansas. The Red Storm could have the hometown edge. ...
