Queen is king at ABCD Camp
HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Avery Queen began this year's ABCD Camp as the shortest player present. He departed as co-MVP of the Senior All-Star game.
Queen, a 5-foot-7 point guard from Moreno Valley, Calif., had 5 points and a game-high 10 assists Saturday night to share MVP honors with fellow guard Taliek Brown, from Queens, N.Y. The two players led their team to a 124-122 victory.
"I surprised a lot of people," said Queen, who plays for Main Central High School. "I just played my game, which is passing the basketball." Besides saying he plans to officially visit Miami, Michigan and UCLA, Queen added his college choices also include Connecticut and Georgetown. He likely will wait until the spring to announce his decision. Brown, from St. John's Prep, displayed poise and a deadly 3-point shot (4 of 4) while scoring a game-high 24 points. "I have no idea what happened tonight, but I felt gooood," Brown said with a smile. "After I made my first basket, I felt relaxed." Brown, 6-foot point guard, said his list of schools included St. John's, Syracuse, Ohio State, Massachusetts, Texas, Maryland, UCLA and Georgia. ... Brown joins Omar Cook, of Christ the King HS, and Andre Barrett, of Rice HS, in a trio of highly touted New York City point guards. Cook attended last week's NIKE Camp in Indianapolis. Barrett, who played with Brown on the winning ABCD Senior All-Star team, had 3 points, 6 assists and 1 turnover in the camp finale. The 5-9 Barrett said he is "wide open" in his college search but expects to have a list of finalists soon, probably after a camp in Las Vegas this weekend. ...
