Maggette signs three-year deal with Magic
July 12, 1999 SportsLine wire reports
ORLANDO, Fla. -- He wasn't the first pick in the 1999 NBA Draft, but he's the first rookie to sign with his new team.
Maggette, 19, who left Duke after his freshman year, will receive $3.06 million over three seasons with a club option for a fourth at $1.443 million, based on the new collective bargaining agreement. He is playing with Orlando at the Atlanta Summer Shootout. One of the most athletic players available on draft day, Maggette, a Chicago native, was rumored as the possible top overall pick by the Bulls, who opted for his college teammate, Elton Brand. Maggette slipped to Seattle at No. 13 but was not a Sonic for long. He was dealt with veterans Dale Ellis, Don MacLean and Billy Owens to Orlando for forward Horace Grant and second-round picks in 2000 and 2001. "Corey Maggette is a player that we feel has a tremendous upside," Magic general manager John Gabriel said. "We think that he was one of the elite athletes in this year's draft and will be in this game." LAST MONTH, THE MAGIC released one of the league's most exciting players of all-time -- Dominique Wilkins -- and his brother, Gerald, who has the same build as Maggette at 6-foot-6, 220 pounds. "A lot of teams across the league talked about matching the athleticism that is coming into the NBA year in and year out," Gabriel said. "We believe that this 19-year-old can do that for us." Maggette was slick but unpolished at Duke, averaging 10.6 points in just 17.7 minutes over 39 games. He shot 52 percent from the field, 34 percent from 3-point range and 72 percent from the free-throw line. One of four Blue Devils taken in the first 14 picks this year, Maggette was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Rookie Team and the All-ACC Tournament Second Team. He was a three-time Parade All-American at Fenwick High School in Bellwood, Ill. Under the guidance of new coach Doc Rivers, a veteran NBA guard, Maggette should be an integral part of a new breed of Magic. Matt Harpring and Michael Doleac excelled in their rookie years last season. Star guard Penny Hardaway is expected to be elsewhere next season. Copyright 1999 SportsTicker Enterprises, L.P.
