SportsLine wire reports
TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays geared up for the
stretch run Wednesday by acquiring first baseman David Segui from
the Seattle Mariners for pitchers Tom Davey and Steve Sinclair.
Segui, a 33-year-old switch-hitter, is batting .293 with nine
home runs and 39 RBI in 90 games. He should take over at first
base, easing Carlos Delgado to designated hitter. Segui's .996
fielding percentage ranks second among first baseman in baseball
history.
Segui returns to Canada, where he spent parts of three seasons
with the Montreal Expos from 1995-97. The son of former major
league pitcher Diego Segui, he began his career with the
Baltimore Orioles in 1990. He was traded to the New York Mets a
week before the 1994 season and sent to Montreal in the middle
of the 1995 campaign.
A .284 career hitter, Segui is coming off consecutive .300
seasons. He batted .305 last year with 19 homers and a
career-high 84 RBI in 143 games.
Toronto has won 20 of its last 25 and leads the Boston Red Sox
by one-half game in the American League wild card race.
