Terms were not disclosed, but the San Antonio Express-News is reporting that Porter agreed to a three-year, $6.6 million deal and that the Spurs will use their $2 million contract exception on the 14-year NBA veteran.

Porter played for the Miami Heat last season, averaging 10.5 points, 2.9 assists and 2.8 rebounds in 27.3 minutes per game. He shot 45.6 percent from the field and his 41.1 percent mark from 3-point range was 12th-best in the league.

"While I am confident that Miami will contend for a championship, San Antonio seems to provide a better situation for me and my family," Porter said in a statement released Thursday. "I wish the Miami Heat and Coach Riley much success as they pursue the same dreams that I do."

The 36-year-old Porter can play either guard position and can be used to back up Jaren Jackson, a free agent the Spurs hope to re-sign, as well as Avery Johnson and Mario Elie.

Porter spent his first 10 NBA seasons in Portland after being selected by the Trail Blazers in the first round of the 1985 draft. After three seasons in Minnesota, he signed with Miami prior to last season.

An All-Star in 1991 and 1993, Porter has appeared in 1,054 games, averaging 13.3 points, 6.2 assists and 3.1 rebounds. Porter has seen action in the postseason in all but one of his seasons and appeared in the finals in 1990 and 1992. His career free-throw percentage of 86.1 in the NBA Finals ranks seventh all-time.
