Aug. 9, 1999
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New Jersey Nets
deepened their frontcourt Monday, re-signing veteran forward
Forum: Will the Nets make a return to the playoffs this year? Originally a 1993 first-round pick of the Charlotte Hornets, Burrell, 28, is entering his seventh season. He received the team's $1 million salary cap exception last season and will make $697,500 this season as per the collective bargaining agreement. Terms of Eschmeyer's contract were not disclosed. New Jersey signed the 6-foot-7 Burrell as a free agent before the start of the 1999 season. In 32 games, he averaged 6.6 points and 3.7 rebounds. Burrell scored in double figures eight times before undergoing season-ending knee surgery on April 24. "We are very pleased that Scott has decided to stay with the Nets," general manager John Nash said. "He's a versatile player who fits in well with the Nets' style of play." Burrell has career averages of 7.1 points and 3.5 rebounds in 305 career games. His best season came in 1995-96, when he averaged 12.3 points for Charlotte. He also was a member of the 1998 NBA champion Chicago Bulls. The 6-11 Eschmeyer was the Nets' second-round pick and the 34th overall selection out of Northwestern. He averaged 19.6 points and 10.1 rebounds as a senior, earning second team All-America honors. "We feel he has the qualities to adapt to the style of play at the NBA level," Nash said. Eschmeyer is first or second in six statistical categories at Northwestern and was named to the Big 10 Conference First Team three straight years. On Tuesday, the Nets signed versatile forward Keith Van Horn to a six-year, $72 million contract extension and also signed Jamie Feick to a six-year, $15 million deal.
