JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Dom Capers and the Dominators. Sounds like a cheesy '50s do-wop group doesn't it? Not quite.

Forum: Do the Jags have the best defense in the NFL?

 T O P   N E W S

It's the name of what could be the best defensive unit in the NFL this season, and the man who has made the Jacksonville Jaguars an instant Super Bowl contender. And like those harmonizing bands of yesteryear, this group churns out hit after hit. Just ask the San Francisco 49ers' offense.

In what was supposed to be a battle of two of the best offenses in the league, the Jaguars defense, who coined the phrase the Dominators in tribute to the new aggressive style created by coordinator Capers, nearly pitched a shutout against the much-ballyhooed West Coast Offense.

Final score: Jaguars 41, San Francisco 3 -- 49ers 3!

The Niners haven't been held without a touchdown in a game since the 1997 season finale against the Seattle Seahawks. The last time they were held to three points was in 1991 against a New Orleans Saints defense orchestrated by ... you guessed it, the head Dominator.

In fact, the Jags defense did something the 49ers offense couldn't do all game -- score a touchdown, Aaron Beasley's 95-yard interception return in the waning moments putting the finishing touches on the rout.

"My gosh. I can't remember us being just shut down and out of sync like that," San Francisco quarterback Steve Young said. "That was not pretty. We couldn't move the football. It felt like we were still in the preseason offensively."

The 49ers might be known for the gold rush, but in this game, the offense was turned into gold dust by Capers' crew.

Brace yourself. The final numbers are scary. We're talking Blair Witch scary. But this is no myth, it's a stark reality the 49ers must deal with.

Young was 9 of 26 for 96 yards and two interceptions. The trio of Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens and J.J. Stokes caught a combined eight passes for 98 yards.

"It was a big challenge for our entire defense," Jacksonville linebacker Kevin Hardy said. "I know the guys in the secondary were pumped up because of all the talk about the 'Big Three' from San Francisco. For those guys to play as well as they did, they deserve a major pat on the back. Overall, (the defense) played solid the whole day."

The two-headed monster of Charlie Garner and Lawrence Phillips was indeed frightful. Take away Garner's 37-yard run in the second quarter and they would have finished with 32 yards on 12 carries rather than 69. Phillips, a World League wonder during the offseason, didn't even last the whole game. He suffered a concussion on a kickoff return in the third period and was out of action for the rest of the game. Welcome back to the good old USA -- and the NFL -- Lawrence.

Five turnovers. Eight punts. One for 14 on third-down conversions. Two drives inside the Jaguars 10-yard line ended by turnovers, one coming on the Beasley interception.

Better to stop now than draw an NC-17 rating.

"I thought our defense performed well," Jags coach Tom Coughlin said, trying to contain his enthusiasm. "The key for us was getting five turnovers and no turnovers for our team. Right before the half they took the ball down the field and (defensive end Tony) Brackens comes around the corner, sacks the quarterback and knocks the ball out and we get the ball. That was a key momentum play."

Said Owens: "We need to regroup. They are a great team, but, my goodness, what a way to start the season."

Coughlin doesn't allow his assistants to speak to the media. But Capers didn't have to say a word. His zone-blitzing scheme spoke for itself and left an impression on this young franchise. Not to mention the NFL.

"We've had moments in team history where we've had the defense shine," Jags quarterback Mark Brunell said. "But today was special. We enjoy this style of defense we're playing -- it's aggressive. As an offense, I know it's tough to move the ball against.

"We have a new style of defense and hopefully we showed something today that will continue for the rest of the season."

That would be music to the Jaguars' ears. Provided of course, by the Dominators.
