Kentucky coach dismisses wide receiver Davis
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Junior wide receiver Garry Davis was kicked off the
Kentucky football team on Friday for violating team policy, coach Hal Mumme
said Friday.
Davis, who started the first eight games of the season, was third on the team with 26 receptions for 312 yards and one touchdown. Davis' dismissal further depletes the wide receiver ranks. "Our lack of wide receivers just killed us," the coach said of Kentucky's 23-22 loss Thursday night at No. 8 Mississippi State. "We couldn't get anybody open." Kentucky must win at Vanderbilt next Saturday if it is to become eligible for a bowl game. Mumme said that after Thursday's loss, the Wildcats are ready to make a strong showing. "The overriding sentiment in the locker room was anger at themselves, not dejection, for not making some plays they should have made," he said during a teleconference. He said his players shouldn't take all of the blame. "The bottom line is you've got to look at Mississippi State and say they may have struggled on offense and things like that, but there's a reason they're eighth in the nation," he said. "They've been able to figure out ways to win games."
