The Patriots, who fired Pete Carroll on Monday, asked for and received permission from Broncos coach Mike Shanahan to interview Kubiak.

But on Tuesday, Kubiak bowed out.

"I have talked with the Patriots via telephone, and we had a great conversation," Kubiak said Tuesday in a statement. "However, I'm not going to be going to New England for an interview.

"I'm very flattered and I appreciate being contacted and considered for the position. For a number of personal reasons, I will not be a candidate for that job."

Kubiak, 38, previously turned down assistants jobs with Atlanta and Baltimore as well as the head job at Colorado. Kubiak, who played for the Broncos for nine seasons, has been reluctant to uproot his family, particularly if it were not for a coaching job in his native Texas.
