The move was expected as Henning has maintained close ties with former Jets coach Bill Parcells, now the team's director of football operations. Parcells had promised a promotion for Henning, who also will retain his position as quarterbacks coach.

Having Henning as the offensive coordinator should benefit new coach Al Groh, who has no previous NFL head-coaching experience.

Henning led the offense of the Super Bowl champion Washington Redskins in 1988 and '91 and also served as offensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions and Buffalo Bills.

He has seven years of head-coaching experience, posting a 38-73-1 record with the Atlanta Falcons (1983-86) and San Diego Chargers (1989-91). Henning joined Parcells' staff with the Jets in 1998.
