Browns sign offensive lineman Everett Lindsay
Having struck out on the top three offensive players they pursued as unrestricted free agents, the Cleveland Browns finally landed a veteran Monday when they reached a contract agreement with sixth-year lineman Everett Lindsay, SportsLine has learned.
A former Mississippi standout, Lindsay began his career with the Minnesota Vikings as a fifth-round choice in the 1993 draft. Although he missed the entire 1994 and '96 seasons with injuries, he was a valuable backup on the Vikings' offensive line. In 1999, Minnesota's five starters on the line Agreed to a network interview request only when the reporter agreed to include Lindsay. The Vikings surprisingly traded him to the Ravens April 18 for a sixth-round choice in the '99 draft. Lindsay has appeared in 76 regular-season games in his career, with 34 starts. Ravens officials attempted to re-sign Lindsay during the season, but he elected instead to become an unrestricted free agent and test the market. Earlier on Monday, SportsLine cited Lindsay as one of the potential top bargains in free agency. The signing is a key one for the Browns, who must upgrade their offensive line after quarterback Tim Couch absorbed a terrible beating in his '99 rookie campaign. It also provides the team its first success during this year's free agent signing period. The club had targeted Jacksonville tailback James Stewart, New England wide receiver Shawn Jefferson and Buffalo tight end Jay Riemersma as its top three offensive priorities in free agency. But Stewart signed with Detroit, Jefferson signed with Atlanta and Riemersma re-upped with the Bills.
