The result put Costa Rica, South Korea and Canada in a three-way tie with two points apiece. Costa Rica advanced to the finals based on most goals scored. Canada won a coin flip with South Korea to move on.

In Group C play, Mexico and Guatemala played to a 1-1 draw in the first game of Thursday night's doubleheader. The victory enabled Mexico and Trinidad to reach the quarterfinals. Mexico won the group with four points, followed by Trinidad with three.

Costa Rica will play Trinidad in the first match of Sunday's quarterfinal doubleheader at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium, followed by Canada's game against Mexico.

Medford began his scoring play by starting a combination with Paulo Wanchope. Medford redirected Wanchope's return pass from the right side into the net with a soft touch from four meters.

Lee Min-Sung gave South Korea a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute with a low, 21-meter line drive inside the right post.

South Korea went ahead in the 14th minute on Lee Dong-Gook's 20-meter shot. But Wanchope equalized in the 66th minute on a 9-meter header.

Guatemala equalized two minutes after Mexico's Emilio Mora scored in the 26th minute. Erick Miranda headed Freddy Garcia's 23-meter free kick underneath the crossbar from four meters.

Guatemala had two chances to break the tie late in the first half, but Mexican goalkeeper Christian Martinez jumped to make one-handed deflections of Garcia's free kick just outside the penalty area in the 42nd minute and Jorge Rodas' 33-meter free kick in the 45th.
