Canada upsets Mexico, to face Trinidad and Tobago in semifinals
SAN DIEGO -- In a major upset, Canada eliminated Mexico from the CONCACAF Gold Cup, winning its quarterfinal 2-1 Sunday when Richard Hastings scored in the third minute of overtime.
Canada, which hasn't even qualified for a World Cup since 1986, tied the score in the 83rd minute on a close-range goal by Carlo Corazzin, who also scored Canada's two goals in the first round. Hastings then got the winner off a cross from Martin Nash, shooting from near the left corner of the penalty area. Nash is the younger brother of Dallas Mavericks guard Steve Nash. Canada, which advanced out of the first round by winning a coin flip with South Korea, extended its unbeaten streak to nine games. In 20 previous games against Mexico, Canada had a 2-13-5 record, getting outscored 51-12. Canada had played Mexico twice before in the Gold Cup, losing 8-0 in 1993 and 3-1 in 1991. In the semifinals, Peru plays Colombia on Wednesday at San Diego and Canada plays Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday at Los Angeles. The tournament, played biennially, is the championship of soccer's North and Central American and Caribbean region.
In the opener of the doubleheader, Mickey Trotman scored in the 11th minute of overtime to lift Trinidad and Tobago over Costa Rica 2-1 despite the absence of star forward Dwight Yorke. William Sunsig scored for Costa Rica with one minute left in regulation. Following a corner kick, Sunsig put a bouncing shot past goalkeeper Clayton Ince from the top of the penalty area. Trotman got the game-winning on a shot from the top of the penalty area that beat goalkeeper Hermido Barrantes. Arnold Dwarika had scored Trinidad's first goal in the 26th minute. Yorke, who had a goal and two assists in Tuesday's 4-2 win over Guatemala, went back to England to play in Manchester United's 1-0 win over Leeds on Sunday in the Premier League.
