Chargers sign WR Conway from Bears
The San Diego Chargers, suddenly aggressive in the unrestricted free agent market, have signed wide receiver Despite missing six games in 1999 with a high ankle sprain, Conway was viewed by most scouts as the best deep threat available in a remarkably thin wide receiver crop of free agents. When the Bears signed wide receiver Marcus Robinson to a new contract last month, it all but signaled the end of Conway's career in Chicago. The Bears also acquired wideout Eddie Kennison from the New Orleans Saints on Monday. The former Southern California star was the Bears' first-round choice in the 1993 draft and he became a full-time starter in his second season. He played in 93 games for the Bears, 81 of them starts, and caught 329 passes for 4,498 yards and 31 touchdowns. His best season was 1996, when Conway caught 81 passes for 1,049 yards. Conway became the first player in Bears history to post consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, in 1995-96. San Diego feels that, if he is healthy, Conway can regain the form that only a few seasons ago made him one of the league's premier young deep threats. On Monday night, San Diego re-signed unrestricted free agent wideout Jeff Graham, the team's leading receiver in 1999. The Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs also were interested in Conway.
