Canada's Hastings named top Gold Cup rookie
LOS ANGELES -- Canada midfielder Richard Hastings was voted leading rookie of the Gold Cup soccer tournament as the event's top players were named on Friday.
Goalkeeper Craig Forrest, defender Jason deVos and forward Carlo Corazzin were also named to the Gold Cup's Best 11. Hastings scored the winning goal in extra time to give Canada a dramatic 2-1 quarter-final victory over Mexico, the tournament's three-time defending champions. The goal was his first in eight international matches. The 22-year-old midfielder, who was not among Canada's starters when the Gold Cup began, never left the lineup after replacing an injured Paul Fenwick in the first Group D match against Costa Rica. "It's a great honor to be selected," Hastings said. "Obviously, it was a shock for me because I wasn't expecting to play at all. "I'd like to thank the coach (Holger Osieck) for putting me in and all the players for helping me out," added Hastings. Joining the Canadians on the Best 11 were Mexico's Rafael Marquez and Ramon Ramirez, Trinidad's Arnold Dwarika and Russell Latapy, Colombia's Faustino Asprilla, Cobi Jones of the United States, Peru's Roberto Palacios and Carlos Pavon of Honduras. Pavon and Corrazin lead the tournament in scoring with three goals each. The media panel will vote for the tournament's Most Valuable Player after Sunday's final between Canada and Colombia.
