The U.S. stormed to a 4-0 lead after 22 minutes and never looked back, with Parlow leading the way. The U.S. will resume group play on Tuesday versus Denmark, its opponent in the opening match of the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Sweden, a participant in this fall's Sydney Olympics and the runners-up in the 2000 Australia Cup this past January, will be the opponent in the Americans' final Group A match on Thursday.

The 2000 Algarve Cup features four countries that will participe in the 2000 Olympics this fall: China, Norway, Sweden and the U.S.

Canada, Denmark, Finland and host Portugal round out the field in one of the most competitive international women's soccer events outside of the Women's World Cup and the Olympics.

The tournament is played in the Algarve region of Portugal on the southern tip of the country.
