Desperate for depth in their linebacker corps, the Green Bay Packers have signed a veteran free agent desperate for a chance to demonstrate he can stay healthy and again be a productive player.

SportsLine.com has confirmed the Packers signed former Miami Dolphins linebacker Anthony Harris

to a one-year contract worth $413,000. The four-year veteran was released by the Dolphins earlier this spring after two injury-plagued seasons.

Harris, 27, played only nine games during the 1998 and '99 campaigns. A knee injury limited him to five games in '98 and a groin injury to only four appearances last season. Before those injuries, the former Auburn standout was regarded as an athletic linebacker with the potential to become a full-time starter under former coach Jimmy Johnson.

In his four seasons, Harris played in 32 games with 19 starts and totaled 86 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery. His appearances the last two seasons were primarily on special teams. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 1996.

Green Bay has been seeking linebacker help much of the free agent signing period. The Packers most recently were outbid by New England for linebacker Tedy Bruschi. It's expected that Harris will serve as a backup at the outside linebacker spots in Green Bay and also play on special teams.
