WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Starting fullback Charles Evans could be lost to the
Baltimore Ravens for as many as three months, though Evans vowed Monday to
be back by October after tearing a major tendon in his left triceps.
The loss of the durable Evans, who had started 85 straight games,
motivated the Ravens to sign veteran free-agent fullback Sam Gash.
Gash arrived at the Ravens' training complex around 1 p.m. Monday and
was to undergo a physical before participating in a late-afternoon workout.
On Monday, doctors informed the team Evans could possibly be out until
November.
Evans suffered the injury in Saturday night's exhibition game with
Philadelphia.
"I want to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. I can't
remember the last time I was hurt in training camp or during the season, it'
s been so long," Evans said. "I've played so many straight games. That part
is disappointing.
"So, for me now, I'm just trying to get it healthy, get ready to play."
Evans is aware of the doctors' predictions for a November return. He
wants to beat that prediction.
"Knowing my body and knowing me, I'm guessing from today (it will be)
about two months," Evans said of his return. "You do the necessary
treatment. Instead of treating it two times a day you might have to do it
four times a day. From my standpoint, that's what I have to do. Try and get
back as soon as I can."
Evans said he sustained "a couple of hits" in which damage from a helmet
injured the triceps.
The tendon is completely torn.
"It just kind of tore in half and stayed in place. It didn't roll up. So
they just kind of re-attached it and reinforced it," Evans said. "My healing
time should be a little quicker ... I know how I go about trying to heal."
