The scoop: Tremendous physical specimen could be a top notch linebacker if he wanted to be.

The comparisons to Ron Dayne are inevitable. T.J. Duckett is 6-2, 255 pounds, and he is a bruising tailback who combines rare size, strength and speed, just like Dayne (5-10, 252) did for Wisconsin.

The difference is that Duckett is just learning how to be a running back. He played quarterback (that's right, quarterback) and linebacker in high school.

Duckett has developed from strictly a short-yardage brute at the beginning of last season to the Spartans' main man entering his sophomore year.

"I'm on my way to becoming a complete running back," said Duckett, whose brother, Tico, ranks second in MSU history with 4,212 career rushing yards (1989-92).

T.J. began last season as a backup linebacker and part-time running back. But it appears he can now throw away his defensive playbook.

The Spartans are building a good part of their offense around his still somewhat-raw ability. Duckett finished last season with 606 yards rushing on 118 carries (a 5.1-yard average). He scored 10 touchdowns.

Duckett wasn't a starter, but his role increased considerably late in the season. He rushed for 159 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries against Penn State.

Nevertheless, Duckett almost always went to the sideline on passing downs. He had just two receptions.

"He's an every-down back now," new coach Bobby Williams said.

It's been quite a transformation for Duckett, who admits he misses playing linebacker, but knows he can make a bigger impact on offense.

"To try to play two ways all the time is not realistic," Duckett said.

He often got confused trying to learn both the offense and defense.

"All I wanted to do early in the season was run straight ahead," Duckett said. "Now, I'm learning to read the holes a lot better."

Reading the holes instead of plugging them ... that's the idea.
