Maybe he just needed some time to sleep on it, sufficient shut-eye for Robert Porcher to fall asleep counting millions of dollars instead of sheep.
Whatever the reason for his change of heart, SportsLine.com has confirmed
that the Detroit Lions defensive end on Tuesday agreed to the same
four-year, $25 million contract extension that only one day earlier caused
him to bolt training camp a discouraged man. League and team sources
confirmed the agreement and Porcher is expected back in camp Tuesday
afternoon.
The extension, which essentially results in a five-year contract since
Porcher last week signed the one-year tender as a "franchise" player,
includes a $10 million signing bonus. The agreement came even as Lions
officials continued discussions over how to deal with Porcher's absence. It
is not known yet if he will be fined for missing Monday afternoon's
practice session.
If he is, however, Porcher certainly can afford the penalty.
Porcher was excused by coach Bobby Ross from the Monday morning practice
to huddle with his agent and discuss a long-term offer the team made Sunday. But the eight-year veteran did not report for the afternoon session
and, as of Monday evening, he had not returned to camp. Agent Ricky Lefft
could not be immediately reached for comment Tuesday.
Porcher in February rejected a five-year, $35 million offer from the Lions
that included a signing bonus of $13 million. He then changed his mind and
tried to accept the deal, but the team already had sent the paperwork to
the league designating him a "franchise" player. So that delay six months
ago, in essence, cost Porcher between $7 million-$10 million.
A former first-round draft choice, Porcher has double-digit sacks in each
of the past four seasons, and 50 sacks total over that period.
On a positive front, it appears Detroit quarterback
Charlie Batch is poised
to take the next step in his rehabilitation from a broken leg. Batch was
examined Monday in Birmingham, Ala., by noted orthopedic surgeon James
Andrews and was cleared for light jogging. There remains an outside chance Batch could be ready for the Sept. 3 regular-season opener at New Orleans.
