All-America checklist: Quarterbacks

Aug. 14, 2000
SportsLine.com/Lindy's reports

Michael Vick, Virginia Tech (So., 6-1, 214)

No quarterback can match his speed, his arm strength, his all-around razzmatazz. You want to watch the other quarterbacks on this list, but, with Vick, you want to watch and set the VCR. Could he be better in 2000? Well, he had a lousy spring game, but the Hokies are opening up the offense. More...

Career 152 90 1,840 12 5 108 585 5.4 8
Drew Brees, Purdue (Sr., 6-1, 206)

Brees ranked only 33rd in NCAA passing efficiency last season, but there's do doubt he's a gunslinger of the first order and a gritty competitor who will do whatever it takes to win. He's thrown for more than 8,000 yards and has 64 touchdowns in the past two seasons.

Career 717 1,166 8,124 64 33 158 379 2.4 9
Chris Weinke, Florida State (Sr., 6-5, 240)

Probably the least athletic quarterback on the list, but he's got what everyone else wants -- a national championship ring. He's poised, powerfully built and productive -- 46 touchdowns in two seasons as a starter. He came back to school as a 28-year-old senior to win another title. Don't be surprised if he does.

Quincy Carter, Georgia (Jr., 6-3, 218)

With lots of good options at his disposal -- he could be playing professional baseball or be in an NFL camp right now -- he decided he wanted to be the man to lead Georgia to the SEC title. He will again have great numbers, but his All-American status might depend on whether he can beat Florida and/or Tennessee. More...

Career 568 309 4,406 26 16 181 585 3.2 8
Eric Crouch, Nebraska (Sr., 6-1, 206)

He nearly quit the team early last season, but stuck with it and claimed the starting job from Bobby Newcombe. He's one of the most accomplished running quarterbacks in school history -- which is saying a lot -- and he's a good enough passer to lead the Huskers to a national title. More...

Career 261 132 1,870 11 8 276 1,570 4.9 21
Kurt Kittner, Illinois (Jr., 6-3, 205)

With an amazing touchdown-to-interception ratio, Kittner led last year's Illini resurgence, capped by a 63-21 pounding of Virginia in the postseason. In three years, Illinois has gone from 0-11 to 3-8 to 8-4... to being ranked in the preseason. More...

Antwaan Randle El, Indiana (Jr., 5-10, 194)

He's been one of college football's most exciting players since he stepped on the field as a freshman, and last season became the first sophomore in Big Ten history to reach 5,000 total yards. His two-year totals: 4,022 passing yards, 1,661 rushing yards. Has 46 career TDs, split evenly between passing and rushing.

Career 552 277 4,022 23 18 451 1,661 3.7 23
Marques Tuiasosopo, Washington (Sr., 6-2, 200)

No QB means more to his team than this guy. Tuiasosopo was given a chance to maximize his athletic skills last season when coach Rick Neuheisel added some option to the offense. Tuiasosopo responded: Against Stanford, he became the first player in NCAA history to pass for 300 yards and run for 200. More...

Career 438 248 3,355 17 17 220 1,279 4.5 14
Josh Heupel, Oklahoma (Sr., 6-2, 214)

Heupel was the beneficiary of Oklahoma's 180-degree switch to a wide-option offense, but he's more than the product of his system. He's able to make quick reads and accurate throws, which is why he set 20 school records last season and is on pace to become the career passing leader at OU. Chat transcript...

Carson Palmer, Southern California (So., 6-5, 220)

He split time as a true freshman and started fast in 1999 before a broken collarbone cost him the final eight games. He still has much to prove, but he has dropback NFL-like skills, which gives him as much upside as anyone on this list (Vick excluded).
