INDIANAPOLIS -- Angel Martino, who won six Olympic medals during her swimming career, will likely retire after failing to qualify at the U.S. trials.

Martino, a 33-year-old mother, failed to reach the final of the 100-meter freestyle Sunday night. She was 11th in the semifinals.

Martino hinted at entering the 50 free, but apparently left Indianapolis on Monday. Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres are favorites in the event, which begins Tuesday with the preliminaries and semifinals.

"I have another life waiting for me," Martino said Sunday. "Right now I want to go home and see my baby."

Three-year-old son Michael remained home in Milledgeville, Ga., with his grandmother. Martino's husband and coach, Mike, is a professor at Georgia College and State University.

Martino had her first child after winning two golds and two bronzes at the Atlanta Games. She launched a comeback 1½ years ago.
