All-America checklist: Receivers

Aug. 15, 2000
SportsLine.com/Lindy's reports

Santana Moss, Miami (Sr., 5-10, 180)

The thing about Moss is he can catch a short pass and juke defenders all the way down the field, or he can just line up and blow right past them with 4.3 speed. He's a threat to go the distance at any time, and teams would be wise to punt out of bounds (he averaged 14.2 on returns last season, with two TDs.) More...

Rec. Yds. Avg. TD LONG
1999 54 899 16.6 6 80
Career 98 1,798 18.5 14 80
David Terrell, Michigan (Jr., 6-3, 208)

Terrell played both ways last season, a la Charles Woodson, although Terrell's emphasis was on offense. He should be able to concentrate even more on that side of the ball this season (as well as punt returns) because the Wolverines don't figure to need much help at cornerback. More...

Rec. Yds. Avg. TD LONG
1999 71 1,038 14.6 7 57
Career 85 1,187 14.0 9 57
Ronney Daniels, Auburn (So., 6-1, 212)

The former Montreal Expos farmhand made a triumphant return to football last season, setting a school record with 1,068 yards and earning SEC freshman of the year honors. Imagine if he was with Florida State last season -- that was the team he originally signed with out of high school after the 1995 season.

Rec. Yds. Avg. TD LONG
1999 56 1,068 19.1 9 84
Career 56 1,068 19.1 9 84
Freddie Milons, Alabama (Jr., 5-11, 188)

Everybody wants to play like Florida State's Peter Warrick played last season... and Milons can. He is plenty versatile like Warrick, scoring touchdowns by receiving, returning and passing last season. Without Shaun Alexander in the offense, Milons just needs to do more of everything -- he only had four TDs in 1999.

Rec. Yds. Avg. TD LONG
1999 65 733 11.5 2 39
Career 84 946 11.4 2 39
Andre' Davis, Virginia Tech (Jr., 6-1, 196)

Sounds simple -- have Davis go deep. Davis is fast enough to even run down the bombs from strong-armed sophomore Michael Vick, forming perhaps the most lethal combination in the country. Davis, who also scored three rushing touchdowns last season, might be adding punt returns to his resume this year.

Rec. Yds. Avg. TD LONG
1999 35 962 27.5 9 74
Career 40 1,045 26.1 9 74
Quincy Morgan, Kansas State (Sr., 6-2, 215)

Not many players get vertical like Morgan does. Last season, he averaged 24 yards on his 42 regular-season receptions, nine of which went for touchdowns. Scouts love what they have seen -- he is rated as the fourth-best senior receiving prospect by National Football Scouting Inc. More...

Rec. Yds. Avg. TD LONG
1999 42 1,007 24.0 9 88
Career 42 1,007 22.1 9 88
Kelly Campbell, Georgia Tech (Jr., 5-10, 170)

Had a breakout season in 1999, setting school records for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. He'll have to make a go of it this season without Dez White on the other side (White left early for the NFL) and without Joe Hamilton throwing the ball. Still, opposing DBs will somehow have to deal with all that speed.

Rec. Yds. Avg. TD LONG
1999 69 1,105 16.0 10 59
Career 80 1,236 15.5 11 59
Nate Poole, Marshall (Sr., 6-3, 203)

Poole is the Thundering Herd's leading returning receiver, and should be in line for even more touchdown receptions this season. James Williams caught 13 TDs last year, but he's in camp with the Seattle Seahawks, so new QB Byron Leftwich likely will rely on Poole near the goal line.

Rec. Yds. Avg. TD LONG
1999 73 1,135 15.5 9 45
Career 147 2,009 13.6 14 45
Latef Grim, Pittsburgh (Sr., 6-0, 190)

Grim is a two-time All-Big East selection, and he's poised for another big season because teams can't double team (or if they do, Antonio Bryant will make them pay). His 75 receptions last year was a Big East record, and he'll own several Pitt career marks by the time this season is over.

Rec. Yds. Avg. TD LONG
1999 75 1,106 14.7 4 80
Career 135 2,012 14.9 13 61
Kareem Kelly, Southern California (So., 6-1, 185)

There are many fast guys on this list, but they'd probably all be playing catch-up to Kelly, who ran 100 meters in 10.33 seconds in the spring. His outstanding freshman season was just a sign of things to come; he'll be zooming up this list in the next couple of years.

Rec. Yds. Avg. TD LONG
1999 54 902 17.0 4 72
Career 54 902 17.0 4 72
