NICOSIA, Cyprus -- Cyprus scored its biggest-ever
international victory with a 5-0 home win over Andorra in their
European group two World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.
They went one better than their previous best, a 4-0 win
over San Marino in February 1999.
Wednesday's result meant Cyprus moved up to second place in
the standings behind Portugal after three games. But both of
Cyprus's wins have been over Andorra who are nailed to the
bottom having lost all four games.
Portugal have seven points from three matches, followed by
Cyprus (6), Estonia (6), Ireland (5), the Netherlands (4) and
Andorra (0).
Close-range shots from Yiannakis Okkas in the 10th and 18th
minutes caught the Andorran defence flat-footed and put the home
side in command. Marios Agathocleous followed up with a third
goal in the 43rd minute with Marios Christodoulou make it 4-0
after 73 minutes. Milenko Spoljaric completed the rout with a
90th minute penalty.
In group six, an 8th-minute goal from Jelisejevs was enough to give Latvia a 1-0 win at San Marino. Latvia now has three points after three games, while San Marino remains at the bottom, pointless after two games.
