WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Jim Grobe, who was 33-33-1 in six seasons at Ohio University, was chosen Monday as the head football coach at Wake Forest.

Grobe replaces Jim Caldwell, who was fired on Nov. 26, after one winning season in eight years.

The Bobcats were 7-4 this season, including wins over Minnesota and Marshall, and won five of their last six games. It was Ohio's first overall winning season since 1997.

Ohio was 0-11 the year before Grobe took over in 1995.

Wake Forest went to the Jeep Aloha Bowl in 1999, but opened this season 0-7 -- including a season-opening loss to Division I-AA Appalachian State. The Demon Deacons finished 2-9, with their only wins over winless Duke and Army.

Wake Forest has won more than three games just three times since 1989.

Grobe, a Virginia graduate, also served as an assistant at Air Force, Marshall and Emory & Henry. He spent three years as a high school coach in Bedford, Va.

Grobe is the 31st head coach in Wake Forest history.
