PHOENIX -- Newly hired Arizona football coach John Mackovic signed a five-year contract for $800,000 a year Tuesday.

The contract, which will have to be approved in late January by the Arizona Board of Regents, calls for $200,000 in base pay and another $600,000 for broadcast appearances, speaking engagements and other activities.

"It was the easiest negotiations for a contract that I've ever experienced," Mackovic said.

Mackovic, 57, was hired last month as head coach for Arizona, where he worked as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 1973-76.

He has also served as head coach at Wake Forest from 1978-80, the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs from 1983-86, Illinois from 1988-91 and Texas from 1992-97.

He was coach of the year in all three collegiate conference, but decided to quit the profession when he was fired by Texas after a 4-7 season.
