Kuwait beat Bahrain to launch World Cup campaign

SINGAPORE -- Kuwait kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-1 win over Gulf rivals Bahrain on Saturday.

Striker Jassem Al Houwaidi opened the scoring for Kuwait in the 66th minute and Naser Al Sauhi got the second six minutes later.

Yusuf A'Amer Al Sadi grabbed a consolation goal for Bahrain in the last minute.

Kuwait and Bahrain will also play Singapore and Kyrgyzstan in Group Four of the Asian preliminary qualifying round for the 2002 finals in Japan and South Korea.
