Saudi Arabia continues domination, Vietnam downs Bangladesh

DAMMAM, Saudi Arabia -- Obeid El Dosary scored twice as Saudi Arabia routed Mongolia 6-0 Thursday night, putting itself in good position to advance to the second round of Asian World Cup qualifying.

In the other game of the doubleheader, Vietnam beat Bangladesh 4-0.

Saudi Arabia (4-0) leads Group 10 with 12 points, five ahead of Vietnam (2-1-1). Bangladesh (1-2-1) and Mongolia (0-4) have been eliminated with two games remaining for each team.

On Saturday, Vietnam plays Mongolia and Saudi Arabia plays Bangladesh.

Saudi Arabia took a 4-0 halftime lead on goals by Sami Al Jaber (20th minute), Mohammad Al Shlhoob (24th), Talal Al Meshal (28th) and El Dosary (40th). Mohammed Al Khilaiwi (66th) and El Dosary (86th) added goals in the second half for the Saudis, who have outscored opponents 20-0.

Vietnam took a 3-0 lead on goals by Nguyen Van Sy (65th), Nguyen Hong Son (73rd) and Nguyen Trung Vinh (77th). Nguyen Hong Son converted a penalty kick in the 88th.

The top team advances to the 10-nation Asian finals, which will produce two qualifiers for the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea.

Saudi Arabia is ranked 32nd among 203 nations by FIFA with Vietnam 99th, Bangladesh 144th and Mongolia 196th.
