Saudi Arabia advance with perfect record

DAMMAM, Saudi Arabia -- Talal Al-Mashal scored four goals Monday night as Saudi Arabia routed Vietnam 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier.

Saudi Arabia, which already had clinched first place in Group 10 and a spot in the second round of Asian qualifying, finished the first round with a 6-0 record and outscored opponents 30-0.

Vietnam (3-2-1) finished second in the group with 10 points, eight behind the Saudis. Bangladesh (1-3-2) was third with five points, followed by Mongolia (0-5-1) with one.

Al-Mashal scored in the 30th, 71st, 79th and 88th minutes.

In the other game of the doubleheader, Mongolia tied Bangladesh 2-2.

Saudi Arabia was the first team to qualify for the 10-nation Asian finals, which will produce two qualifiers for the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea.
