KINGSTON, Jamaica -- Tyrone Marshall scored on a 25-yard shot in the
18th minute, and Jamaica beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0 Wednesday in the opener
of the final round of World Cup qualifying in North and Central America and the
Caribbean.
Marshall, a defender for the Miami Fusion in Major League Soccer, got his
first international goal by beating goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.
The Reggae Boyz, who played at the 1998 World Cup in France, shut out star
forward Dwight Yorke, who scored three goals for Manchester United against
Arsenal on Sunday in England's Premier League.
Before a sellout crowd of 35,000, Hislop stopped Ricardo Gardener's downward
header in the eighth minute.
Two minutes later, Yorke was just wide following a glancing header pass from
Stern John.
Trinidad and Tobago's best chance came in the 32nd minute during a scramble
in front of the goal, but defender Ian Goodison cleared the ball off the goal
line.
Jamaican coach Clovis de Oliveira dedicated the win to Steve Malcolm, a
defender who died in a car accident on Jan. 28.
In other games Wednesday, Mexico was at the United States and Honduras was
at Costa Rica.
The top three teams qualify for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
