Bahrain advances to Asian finals

Bahrain advanced to the finals of Asian qualifying for the 2002 World Cup, winning 1-0 at Kuwait on Tuesday night.

Mohammed Hussein scored in the 72nd minute for Bahrain (5-1), which won Group Four with 15 points, two ahead of Kuwait (4-1-1).

In opener of the doubleheader at Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan tied Singapore 1-1. Mohammed Noor scored in the 60th minute for Singapore (0-4-2), and Kovalenko Ilia tied it in the 78th for Kyrgyzstan (1-4-1).

Bahrain joined Saudi Arabia in the 10-nation Asian finals, which will produce two qualifiers for the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea.

In exhibition games, Germany was at world champion France and Slovakia was at Algeria.

The United States opens the final round of qualifying in the North and Central American and Caribbean region against Mexico on Wednesday night at Columbus, Ohio. Trinidad and Tobago is at Jamaica and Honduras is at Costa Rica.

European qualifying resumes Wednesday, with Andorra at Portugal in Group Two and San Marino in Group Six.
