FUNCHAL, Portugal -- Luis Figo, the world's
most expensive player, scored twice and made another goal in
Portugal's one-sided 3-0 home win over lowly Andorra in a World
Cup qualifying match on Wednesday.
Figo opened the scoring for Portugal within seconds of the
kick-off, easily beating Andorra goalkeeper Koldo Alvarez from
inside the box after receiving a through ball from Rui Costa.
Portugal settled into a slow passing game that barely
allowed the Pyrennean visitors across the half-way line, but
were unable to convert any chances until Pauleta scored with a
header in the 36th minute after Figo crossed from the right.
Figo grabbed Portugal's third goal in the 48th minute when
he converted a deft pass from Nuno Gomes, returning from a hefty
ban imposed by UEFA for his wild behaviour at the end of their
losing Euro 2000 semifinal against France.
Portugal stay top of Group 2 with 10 points, four points
ahead of second-placed Cyprus on six points, while Andorra
remain bottom and have yet to win a point after losing every
qualifying game played so far.
