Late goal gives Costa Rica 2-2 against Honduras

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- Rodrigo Cordero scored in the final minute Wednesday night, giving Costa Rica a 2-2 tie against Honduras in its opener of the final round of World Cup qualifying.

Jose Luis Pineda put Honduras ahead in the third minute, sliding through the defense to knock a header past goalkeeper Alvaro Mesen.

Ronaldo Fonseca Milton tied the score for Costa Rica in the 69th.

Milton Nunez, who had an apparent goal disallowed in the first half because of an offsides call, put Honduras back ahead in the 85th, silencing the crowd of 18,000.

Cordero then beat goalkeeper Milton Reyes on a shot deflected by defender Milton Reyes.

In Wednesday's other openers in the North and Central American and Caribbean region, the United States beating visiting Mexico 2-0 and Jamaica beat visiting Trinidad and Tobago 1-0. The top three teams qualify for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
