ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Boakai Lalugba scored 22 points and Bryan Bailey added
15 Saturday as sixth-seeded Bucknell upset No. 3 seed Colgate 75-68 in the
opening round of the Patriot League Tournament.
The Bison (14-14) will meet second-seed Navy in Sunday's semifinals. Colgate
(13-15) suffered its first opening round loss since 1992.
Bucknell led throughout, holding Colgate scoreless until Pat Campolieta made
a pair of free throws with 14:21 left in the opening half. The Bison scored the
game's first 12 points, and had a 15-5 lead before Mark Linebaugh hit a
3-pointer for Colgate's first field goal at 12:01.
Colgate was able to get within three points but Bailey scored on a layup at
7:15 to make it a five-point margin, and Colgate could get no closer.
A total of 55 fouls were called in the game, with six players fouling out,
and 79 free throws were attempted, including 42 by Bucknell.
Colgate's all-league forward Pat Campolieta was held to eight points and
made only 1 of 9 field goal attempts. Mark Linebaugh, the league freshman of
the year, had 16 points for Colgate. Game summary
Demond Shepard scored 10 of his career-high 17 points
in the first half Saturday to lead Navy in a rout of Army in the opening
game of the tournament.
The Midshipmen (18-11) will face Bucknell in Sunday's semifinals. Navy is
8-0 in tournament games played at home.
John Williams had a season-high 15 points, Francis Ebong added 13 points and
nine rebounds and Robert Reeder had 12 points for Navy.
The Midshipmen opened an early 12-0 lead, getting points from six different
players, while Army missed its first nine field goal attempts.
Shepard had a 3-pointer in the opening salvo, and hit another after Army had
closed to 14-8 with 11:55. His layup six minutes later, to stretch Navy's lead
to 29-17, and Army never got within 10 points again.
Lehigh opened the second half with a 17-0 run, which
included eight points from Scott Taylor, and held on to defeat Lafayette
in the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament.
Alex Jensen scored 23 to lead Lehigh (13-15), which will play top-seeded Holy Cross in Sunday's semifinals. Matt Crawford had 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Taylor finished with 12 points.
The Lehigh run came after the teams had battled to a 36-36 tie in the first half. Lafayette (12-16) did not score a second-half point until Justin DeBerry hit a jumper with 14:20 remaining.
Lehigh led by as many as 19 points in the second half. Lafayette was able to rally and cut the lead to 70-64, but Jensen hit a 3-pointer with 4:43 left, stemming Lafayette's momentum. Ed Lacayo made it 75-64 at 3:14, and Lafayette never
threatened again.
