RICHMOND, Va. -- Andre McCullum's jumper with 2.2 seconds left carried
Old Dominion into overtime and the Monarchs went 6-for-8 from the foul line to
defeat William & Mary 53-47 in a Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinal on
Saturday.
Neither team had a field goal in the overtime period. The Monarchs (13-17)
took the lead 49-47 on two free throws by Ricardo Marsh with 3:28 remaining.
Clifton Jones hit one of two free throws with 2:18 remaining and freshman Troy
Nance hit three of four in the final 34.1 seconds.
The Tribe (11-17) were 0-7 from the field and had five turnovers in the
overtime period.
Old Dominion led 27-19 at the half.
The Tribe took their first lead of the second half on Alex Duggan's jumper
with 2:27 remaining, which gave W&M a 45-43 lead. Marsh tied it with a baseline
jumper with 1:46 remaining. Cody Carbaugh's layup with 16.6 seconds left gave
the Tribe a 47-45 lead, but Andre McCullum's clutch shot tied the game at 47.
Marsh led Old Dominion with 17 points and nine rebounds. McCullum added 11
points and Michael Williams 10 as the Monarchs overcame 27.6 percent shooting
from the floor.
Sherman Rivers had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Tribe, and Jim Moran
added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Game summary
Tim Lyle had a layup and hit one of two free throws in
the final 29.6 seconds Saturday to lift James Madison over Virginia
Commonwealth in a quarterfinal game.
James Madison (12-16) advanced to face George Mason in a semifinal game
Sunday. The season ended for Virginia Commonwealth (16-14) with losses in five
of their last six games.
Matt Treadwell capped a 15-3 run with a follow-up to give the Rams a 52-45
lead with 4:17 remaining. The Dukes scored 14 of the last 19 points, including
seven by Lyle. After Lyle missed a second free throw with 7.9 seconds
remaining, VCU's Bo Jones turned the ball over and Lyle dribbled to end the
game.
