Mid-Con tourney: Valparaiso rallies past Chicago State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Lubos Barton scored a career-high 31 points to lead Valparaiso over Chicago State 84-72 Sunday in the quarterfinals of the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament.

Valparaiso (23-7) will play Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis in the semifinals on Monday, the eighth consecutive year the Crusaders have advanced to the semifinals.

The Crusaders' top scorer in the regular season, Milo Stovall, sat out the game with mononucleosis.

Chicago State (5-23) outscored Valparaiso 20-12 in the first eight minutes of the second half and grabbed a 57-56 lead on a slam dunk and a free throw by Rafael Morris.

Barton ignited an 11-0 run for Valparaiso when he hit two free throws with 11:28 to play.

Raitis Grafs finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Crusaders. Jason Jenkins had 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Dwayne Toatley scored 10 points for Valparaiso.

Tony Jones and Jimmy Mack led Chicago State with 18 points apiece. Game summary

Ind.-Pur.-Indpls. 54, Missouri-Kansas City 52

Charles Price hit two free throws with 3.4 seconds left to secure a narrow win for Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis over Missouri-Kansas City in the quarterfinals.

IUPUI (11-17) will play Valparaiso in the semifinals Monday.

The Jaguars won despite going six minutes without a basket late in the game. Matt Suther's basket pulled UMKC within 49-47, but Matt Hermes broke the drought with a basket for IUPUI with 25 seconds to play.

Suther hit two free throws to cut the lead to 51-49, but a free throw by Sylvester Allen pushed the Jaguars' lead to three.

Javin Tindall missed a 3-pointer for the tie and Price finished the Kangaroos with his free throws.

S. Utah 66, W. Illinois 53

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Frederick House scored 17 points to lead Southern Utah over Western Illinois in the quarterfinals.

Justin Sant and Jeff Monaco added 12 points each and Dan Beus scored 10 for the Thunderbirds. Southern Utah will face Oral Roberts in Monday's semifinals.

Southern Utah built a 36-25 halftime lead by shooting 15-of-25 from the floor while holding Western Illinois (5-23) to 10-of-27 shooting.

Matt Robins led Western Illinois with 12 points. Cory Fosdyck added 10 points.

Oral Roberts 73, Youngstown St. 70

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Markius Barnes scored 31 points to lead Oral Roberts over Youngstown State.

ORU (10-18) will face Southern Utah in Monday's semifinals.

Youngstown State (19-11) led 36-33 at halftime. But ORU shot 15-of-27 from the field in the second half for the come-from-behind win.

Josh Atkinson added 18 points, and Kyan Brown had nine points and 11 rebounds for ORU.

Rafael Cruz led Youngstown State with 16 points. Craig Haese scored 14 points, TeJay Anderson added 12 points and Desmond Harrison scored 10 for the Penguins.
