News roundup: La Salle fires Morris after another losing season

March 9, 2001
SportsLine.com wire reports

PHILADELPHIA -- Speedy Morris was fired Friday after 15 years as basketball coach at La Salle, which has not had a winning record since 1993.

The firing came a day after No. 21 St. Joseph's defeated La Salle 82-74 in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, ending a 12-17 season.

Morris had a 239-202 record with the Explorers. He had a year left on his contract.

"Speedy Morris has contributed much to La Salle University and the La Salle basketball program during his 15 years as head coach. Those contributions have made this decision difficult," athletic director Thomas Brennan said.

"The progress of the program, however, has not been at the level we want to see," he said. "Therefore, we are making this change now."

A search for Morris' replacement will begin immediately, Brennan said.

Farrar fired after five seasons at Idaho

BOISE, Idaho -- Basketball coach David Farrar was fired Friday after five seasons at Idaho.

He leaves after a 6-21 season as the only coach in the league not to make the Big West postseason tournament.

Farrar had two years remaining on a contract which pays him about $125,000 a year.

Farrar was the Vandals' 26th coach. In his five seasons, he was 49-61.

Farrar headed up the Middle Tennessee team from 1991 until '96, when he moved to Idaho as Kermit Davis' assistant. Farrar compiled a 61-73 record for the Blue Raiders.
