Indonesia, India secure wins in qualifiers

Indonesia beat the Maldives 5-0 and India defeated the United Arab Emirates 1-0 Sunday in Asian qualifiers for the 2002 World Cup.

At Jakarta, Indonesia got goals from Agung Setiabudi (11th minute) and Kurniawan Dwiyulianto (15th) in the first half, then got a penalty kick from Bima Sakti in the 50th. Uston Nawawi added a goal in the 60th and Bambang Pamungkas scored in the 65th.

Indonesia (1-0) took over the Group Nine lead on goal difference from Maldives (1-1), which beat Cambodia 6-0 last week for its first-ever win in World Cup qualifying. The Maldives were 0-6 in qualifying for the 1998 tournament, getting outscored 59-0, including a 17-0 loss to Iran.

In a Group Eight game at Bangalore, India, Bhaichung Bhutia scored in the 71st minute for the home team.

In the group's opening game on Saturday, Yemen won 5-0 at Brunei to move into first place.

Oceania qualifying also began Saturday, with a pair of Group One games at Coffs Harbour, Australia. Fiji routed American Samoa 13-0 and Tonga beat Somoa 1-0.
