COFFS HARBOUR -- The Australian national soccer team has set a new scoring record, crushing American Samoa 31-0 Wednesday in a World Cup qualifier. The Australian national soccer team had set the previous record Monday with a 22-0 trouncing of Tonga.

Forward Archie Thompson scored 13 goals against the hapless Samoans, breaking the previous record of 10 goals set by Denmark's Spohus Nielsen against France in the 1908 Olympics.

In other Group I action, Fiji easily beat Samoa 6-1.

The winner of Group I, which looks to be Australia, will take on the winner of Group II, which includes New Zealand, the Cook Islands, the Solomon Islands, Tahiti and Vanuatu.

The winner of that match will play the fifth-place team from the South American qualifiers.
