NEW YORK -- Kansas City Wizards midfielder Chris Klein, who scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles, was selected MLS Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday.

Klein triggered Kansas City's flying start in its home opener, where the Wizards were presented with their 2000 MLS Cup championship rings. His third-minute cross from the right wing found Chris Brown for the opening goal.

Just eight minutes after the break, Klein doubled Kansas City's lead with a 16-yard effort.

Klein is fifth on the Wizards' all-time scoring list with 40 points (13 goals, 14 assists).

Other players considered for the award include midfielder Dema Kovalenko of Chicago, and goalkeeper Nick Rimando and midfielder Preki of Miami.
