MONROVIA -- Liberia's hopes of reaching
the 2002 World Cup finals rose on Sunday after the team beat
nearest challengers Sudan 2-0 to move three points clear at the
top of their African qualifying group.
A superb right-foot shot by Greece-based Kelvin Sebwe put
the Lone Stars ahead in the 39th minute. Former World Footballer
of the Year George Weah made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute.
"We still have some games to play and our chances are great,
by God's grace," Weah told Reuters.
The victory gave Liberia 12 points from five matches in
group B. Sudan have nine points and third-placed Nigeria seven.
Nigeria's hopes of qualifying dipped after a surprise 1-0
defeat on Saturday away to Sierra Leone, who had lost all four
of their previous group matches.
