Syria, Oman open with 12-0 routes

Sayed Bayazed scored five goals Monday as Syria opened World Cup qualifying with a 12-0 rout of the Philippines in Damascus.

In Monday's other qualifier in Asia Group One, Oman defeated visiting Laos 12-0.

Bayazed scored in the 14th, 16th, 55th, 78th, 82nd. Mohanad el-Bushi scored in the 47th and 60th minutes, while Syria got one goal each from Tarek Jappan (25th), Bashar Srour (28th), Nihad Haj-Mustafa (45th), Mohamed Afash (75th) and Maher Makki (80th).

At Muscat, Hani al-Dabet scored five times for Oman, connecting in the fifth, 23rd, 30th, 46th and 47th minutes. Yacoub Jouma added goals in the 39th and 43rd minutes, Fawzi Bashir scored in the 36th and 40th, and Oman got single goals from Nasser Zayed (16th) and Taqi Mubarak (21st). Mohammed Khamis added an own goal in the 39th.

The group winner joins Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Qatar and Saudi Arabia in the final round, which will produce two qualifiers for next year's tournament in Japan and South Korea.
