LUANDA -- Cameroon's progress to the 2002
World Cup finals was delayed by a 2-0 defeat by Angola on
Sunday, halting their hopes of becoming the first side to
qualify for the World Cup finals.
Second-half goals from strikers Akwa and Quinzinho ended the
100 percent record of the reigning African champions in
qualifying group A but Cameroon still lead the standings by four
points.
A win for Cameroon in their next match at home to Togo on
July 1 would ensure they qualify for a fourth successive World
Cup finals appearance.
Akwa, Angola's record goalscorer, opened the home side's
tally 14 minutes after the interval and 10 minutes later the
lead was doubled by Quinzinho, the Portuguese-based striker.
Cameroon played without three key players with African
Footballer of Year Patrick Mboma, captain Rigobert Song and
midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe remaining with their European-based
clubs.
