CAIRO -- Egypt maintained their hopes of reaching the World Cup finals by beating Senegal 1-0 in a qualifying match on Sunday.

Senegal stayed second in Group C following their first defeat of the competition, level with third-placed Egypt on nine points but having played a game more. Morocco, who beat Algeria 2-1 on Friday, lead the group by three points.

Egypt scored three minutes into the second half when Ghent striker Ahmed Hossam headed home a left-wing cross from Hansa Rostock midfielder Mohammed Emara.

Before the match, FIFA president Sepp Blatter presented Egypt striker Hossam Hassan with an armband as the world's most capped international.

Hassan, who has played 157 times for his country, became the most capped footballer of all time in January when he played his 151st international, beating the record of Germany's Lothar Matthaeus.
