NEW YORK -- MetroStars forward Clint Mathis was named the
MLS Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, May 6, after
leading his team to a pair of important wins over the Kansas City Wizards and D.C. United.
Mathis, a member of the United States National Team, scored a
natural hat trick to overcome Kansas City 4-1 last Wednesday.
"I am honored to receive this weekly award," Mathis said. "I
have been on a roll lately, and the success of the team has
played a big part. I want to thank my teammates for helping me
win this award."
The 24-year-old also was instrumental in the MetroStars' three-goal rally in the last 11 minutes to complete a 3-2
victory over D.C. United on Saturday, which propelled the club
into a first-place tie in the Eastern Division standings with
the Miami Fusion.
Mathis reduced the deficit in the 79th minute and assisted on
the equalizer scored by Rodrigo Faria less than 10 minutes later
before Petter Villegas notched the winner in the final minute.
